ABB wins contract to support Indonesian geothermal plants in more reliable delivery of clean energy

ABB Ability Symphony® Plus technology to improve the plants’ operational reliability and performance and help to maximize the lifetime of the operator’s investments.

Kevin Kosisko, managing director, ABB Power Generation & Water

Two geothermal power plants in West Java owned and operated by PT Indonesia Power Kamajong that have been generating renewable energy for over two decades are about to benefit from a major retrofit of their turbine control systems by ABB.

The 55-megawatt (MW) Darajat geothermal plant has been operating for 22 years using a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries steam turbine. The Gunung Salak geothermal plant, with three generating units of 60 MW each, has been operating for more than 20 years with Ansaldo steam turbines.

ABB has won the contract to replace the digital electro-hydraulic control (DEHC) system for the steam turbines and will retrofit and replace the turbine control systems with ABB Ability Symphony® Plus turbine control solutions, including governor control, turbine and automatic start-up and integrated Turbine Supervisory Instrumentation System (TSI), also known as Vibration Monitoring System (VMS).

The scope of supply also includes design, engineering, installation and commissioning, training and maintenance, and services post commissioning. Furthermore, ABB will supply auto synchroniser in the Darajat power plant and main stop valves and governor control valves for the three steam turbines in Gunung Salak power plant.

ABB Ability Symphony® Plus is part of the ABB Ability digital portfolio, the company’s unified, cross-industry digital offering, extending from device to edge to cloud. The new system being installed in West Java will come with advanced digital control and protection features – providing users with safe, reliable and economical operations while offering improved access to operational information to ease maintenance and increase availability. The overall project is scheduled for phased completion by end of 2020.

“We have been able to leverage our extensive experience in both digital technologies and turbine control systems to win this contract,” said Kevin Kosisko, managing director of ABB’s Power Generation & Water business. “This retrofit and replacement project will improve flexibility, reliability, availability and reduce maintenance costs at the two geothermal plants. It will also help the customer to embrace new digital technology in support of its efforts to contribute to a sustainable future.”

Straddling oceans, continents and more than 13,000 islands, Indonesia covers 5,000 kilometers of dramatic landscape along the equator. It is also among the most volcanically active countries in the world.

It is these unstable tectonics that lead to Indonesia’s rich geothermal resources. Currently Indonesia is the world’s third largest geothermal electricity producer after the US and the Philippines, channeling its volcanic makeup into this sustainable form of energy. This clean geothermal energy will contribute to government plans to increase power generation capacity – in response to the needs of one of Asia’s fast-growing economies – and to target 23 percent renewables in its energy mix by 2025.

ABB is the global leader for distributed control systems (DCS), confirmed by the ‘Distributed Control Systems Global Market 2016-2021’ report issued by ARC Advisory Group. The company has the largest fleet of installed control systems in the world: 70 million digital enabled devices and 70,000 digital control systems, where ABB Ability Symphony® Plus DCS has over 75 GW of installations globally.

ABB is a leading provider of integrated power and automation solutions with unparalleled experience in partnering with the energy and water industries, bringing them improved operations and sustainable progress.
